Bellefontaine 13, Triad 3 (5 innings)

The Bellefontaine Chieftain Sr. ACME baseball team capped off the regular season Monday night with a 13-3 run-rule victory over the Triad Cardinals.

Triad came out swinging early and jumped on Chiefs starter Maddox Miller in the first inning. Alfred Johnson led things off with a single, Duncan Funderburgh followed with another base hit, and Liam Herron delivered the big swing, lining a two-RBI double to right-center field to put the Cardinals up 2-0 after the opening frame.

Triad starter Silas Newland then worked a clean bottom of the first to keep the early lead intact.

Bellefontaine answered right away in the second inning as the offense got rolling. Ean Fultz singled to start the frame, Hayden Shreve drew a walk, and Nicholas Beair ripped a ball back up the middle to cut the lead to 2-1. The Chiefs then loaded the bases, and Aiden Smith brought home the tying run with a sacrifice fly.

From there, Sennett Stolly and Sammy Kline each delivered RBI singles, with Stolly driving in one and Kline adding two more as Bellefontaine surged ahead 5-2 after two innings.

Triad responded in the third when Johnson tripled to right field and later scored on a groundout, trimming the deficit to 5-3.

However, Bellefontaine immediately answered again in the bottom half. Lincoln Banta drew a leadoff walk, and Shreve came through with a deep RBI triple to right-center before scoring on a groundout from Beair, pushing the lead to 7-3 after three.

From there, Miller settled in on the mound and kept Triad quiet the rest of the way, working around walks and scattered contact to preserve the lead.

The Chiefs then put the game out of reach in the fifth inning. Hudson Konz and Aven Caudill each reached on walks, both advancing on a passed ball, and Lincoln Banta lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Konz. Caudill later scored on a wild pitch, and Beair broke it open with a two-RBI double to center. Hudson Banta added an RBI single, and Sammy Kline followed with another hit to right that brought in the final run, sealing the 13-3 run-rule win.

Miller earned the complete-game victory, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out five Cardinals.

Offensively, Beair and Kline led the way, with Beair finishing with four RBIs and Kline adding three, as every Bellefontaine hitter reached base at least once and eight different Chiefs scored.

For Triad, Johnson finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Herron’s two-RBI double accounted for the Cardinals’ lone extra-base hit and RBIs on the night.

Both teams will now prepare for the District tournament later this week.
