The local boys golf season continued Monday as several area teams competed in the Urbana Country Club Classic, an 18-hole invitational featuring 10 schools at Urbana Country Club.
The official host, Mechanicsburg, turned in the top local finish, placing second overall with a team score of 341. Bellefontaine opened its season with a fourth-place finish at 365, while Triad was led by tournament medalist Cohen Millice. Urbana finished seventh with a team score of 398.
The tournament gave several local teams an opportunity to compete against a strong field early in the season before returning to league and non-league matches later this week.
Mechanicsburg
The Indians continued their strong start to the season with a runner-up finish, 25 strokes behind the team winner, Jonathan Alder, using another balanced team effort.
Senior Mason Bandy led Mechanicsburg with a round of 79, finishing among the top individual golfers in the tournament. Maxwell Popovich and Ryder Buxton each followed with rounds of 86, while MJ Blose carded a 90 to round out the team scoring. Elliott Moore also competed and finished with a 95.
Mechanicsburg once again showed its depth throughout the lineup, placing four golfers at 90 or better on the day.
The Indians’ junior varsity squad also competed, finishing seventh out of 10 teams with a score of 390.
Bodee DeLong paced the JV lineup with a 95, followed by Owen Lawhorn at 96 and Hank Huffman with a 99. Drew Lawhorn added a 100, while Liam O’Laughlin and Caden Canfield each finished at 102.
Mechanicsburg returns to action Wednesday when it hosts the 29th Ryan Reynolds Invitational at Liberty Hills Golf Club.
Bellefontaine
Bellefontaine opened the 2026 season with a fourth-place finish behind a young lineup featuring four freshmen.
Freshman Hudson Banta led the Chieftains with an 87, while fellow freshman Ean Fultz followed closely with an 89. The pair gave Bellefontaine two golfers under 90 in the season-opening tournament.
Junior Noah Smith added a 94, and freshman Keaton Dinovo shot a 95 to complete the team scoring. Freshman Sammy Strayer also represented the Chieftains, finishing with a 102.
The Chieftains will remain busy this week as they host the 29th Ryan Reynolds Invitational on Wednesday at Liberty Hills Golf Club.
Indian Lake
Indian Lake opened the 2026 season with a fifth-place finish in the Urbana Country Club Classic, posting a team score of 367 against a competitive nine-team field.
Senior Jaxon Snipes led the Lakers with an 83, while fellow senior Crew McPherson added a 92 to give Indian Lake a strong start at the top of the lineup. Grant Wickline followed with a 94, Mason Berg carded a 98, and Eli Cummins rounded out the team scoring with a 111.
The Lakers placed four golfers under 100 in their season opener, giving the team a balanced effort as it finished just two strokes behind fourth-place Bellefontaine.
Indian Lake returns to action Tuesday with a noon match against Riverside at Prairie View Golf Club. Meanwhile, the Lady Lakers open their season Tuesday at Cherokee Hills Golf Club in the Riverside Invitational.
Urbana
The Hillclimbers finished with a team score of 398.
Sophomores Kelton McClain and Lane Varney shared team-low honors with rounds of 97. Freshman Brant Markin followed with a 100, while freshman Nolan Smith carded a 104. Sophomore Jackson Stacy rounded out the Hillclimbers’ scoring with a 105.
With several invitationals and dual matches on the schedule this week, Monday’s tournament provided another early-season opportunity for local teams to gain experience and continue building momentum heading into the heart of the fall schedule.
Triad
Triad was paced by one of the day’s top individual performances as junior Cohen Millice earned medalist honors with a tournament-best round of 76.
Millice’s score was the lowest round of the tournament and helped highlight the Cardinals’ afternoon against a competitive field.
Carson Jackson added a 99 for Triad, while Colton Mullin shot a 108 and Hayden Sheppeard finished with a 121.
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday when they travel to Darby Creek Golf Course for a match against Fairbanks.
