Chiefs get second win on homecoming; Lakers shut out Raiders in week 8 high school football

Bellefontaine (2-6) 34, Tecumseh (1-7) 26

Bellefontaine snapped its losing streak Friday night with a 34-26 win over Tecumseh on Homecoming night, earning its second victory of the season in a back-and-forth matchup.

The Arrows struck first with a 10-play, 65-yard drive capped by a five-yard touchdown run from Devin Barner.

The Chiefs answered on their next possession as quarterback Blake Loomis returned from injury and connected with Sutton Daring, who was also back from injury, three times on the drive. The series ended with a two-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at seven.

Bellefontaine took the lead early in the second quarter when Loomis found Bryant Carter out of the backfield for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Tecumseh answered immediately as DJ Blaine returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 14.

The Chiefs responded with another scoring drive, leaning on Carter before Loomis connected with Aven Caudill for a six-yard touchdown. Bellefontaine took a 21-14 lead into halftime.

After a scoreless opening stretch of the second half, Tecumseh put together a lengthy drive that ended with Blaine scoring on a three-yard run on fourth-and-one. The extra point was blocked, leaving the Chiefs ahead 21-20.

Loomis and Daring connected again, this time for a 26-yard touchdown, to extend Bellefontaine’s lead to 28-20.

Tecumseh answered in the fourth quarter when Barner scored his second touchdown of the night on a one-yard run. The Arrows’ two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving them trailing 28-26.

The Chiefs created some breathing room when Carter broke loose for a 13-yard touchdown run. A bad snap on the extra-point attempt kept the score at 34-26.

Tecumseh threatened in the closing minutes, but Blaine threw an interception to Caudill with 1:17 remaining. The Arrows’ defense forced a stop on Bellefontaine’s next possession, giving Tecumseh one more opportunity. However, the Chiefs’ defense held firm to secure the victory.

Loomis had an outstanding return from injury, completing 20 of 23 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns.

Carter led Bellefontaine on the ground with 125 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. He also caught a 21-yard touchdown pass. Daring finished with seven receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns, while Dillon Jones caught six passes for 60 yards. Caudill added a touchdown reception and an interception on defense.

Bellefontaine improved to 2-6 on the season, while Tecumseh fell to 1-7.

Indian Lake (5-3) 35, Benjamin Logan (3-5) 0

In a pivotal Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division matchup with major playoff implications, Indian Lake delivered a statement Friday night, shutting out Benjamin Logan 35-0.

Indian Lake improved to 5-3 on the season, while Benjamin Logan fell to 3-5.

The Lakers opened the scoring in the first quarter when Brady Golldiay connected with Brodey Reisinger for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Corbin Wilson added the extra point to give Indian Lake a 7-0 lead.

Indian Lake extended its advantage in the second quarter. The Lakers scored on a 45-yard fumble return touchdown, followed by a two-yard touchdown run from Golldiay to take a 21-0 lead into halftime.

The Lakers added another touchdown in the third quarter when Nixon Lillard connected with Reisinger for a five-yard scoring pass, making it 28-0.

Golldiay capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Blake Sell. Wilson converted the extra point to seal the 35-0 victory.

Indian Lake’s offense finished with 329 total yards, including 194 passing yards and 135 rushing yards.

Golldiay completed 15 of 26 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the Lakers on the ground with 70 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Reisinger was the leading receiver with nine catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Lillard completed two of four passes for seven yards and a touchdown.

The Indian Lake defense also contributed to the shutout, forcing five fumbles and recovering three, including the fumble return for a touchdown.

Benjamin Logan was held to 84 total yards, including minus-one passing yard and 85 rushing yards.

West Jefferson (7-1) 27, Mechanicsburg (6-2) 13

West Jefferson used a strong second half and two fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat Mechanicsburg 27-13 Friday night in a critical Ohio Heritage Conference North Division matchup.

The two teams battled through a close first half, heading into halftime tied at 7-7.

Neither team could gain much separation in the third quarter, with the score tied at 13-13 heading into the final period.

West Jefferson took control in the fourth quarter, scoring twice while holding Mechanicsburg scoreless to secure the 27-13 victory.

Roughriders quarterback Evan Switalski completed 12 of 17 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns, despite throwing one interception.

Switalski was especially effective in the second half, completing eight of 10 passes for 137 yards.

Jeremy Jester led West Jefferson’s receiving corps with seven catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Four of those receptions came in the second half, totaling 99 yards.

For Mechanicsburg, quarterback Matthew Davis completed 12 of 27 passes for 133 yards. Colton Thomas led the Indians’ receivers with three catches for 49 yards.

Davis also led Mechanicsburg on the ground with 98 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Aidan O’Neal added 26 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

West Liberty-Salem (5-2) 49, Triad (2-6) 14

West Liberty-Salem improved to 5-2 Friday night with a convincing 49-14 win over Triad.

The Tigers got off to a strong start when Zade Bieleski scored on a nine-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Tucker Searles added the extra point to give West Liberty-Salem a 7-0 lead.

The Tigers added three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 28-7 lead into halftime. Silas Krabill scored on a two-yard run, followed by a six-yard touchdown run from Beckett Sullivan.

Triad got on the scoreboard with a one-yard touchdown run by Dawson Hess, but West Liberty-Salem answered just before halftime when Sullivan connected with Sam Kidd for a 33-yard touchdown pass.

Triad opened the second half with a 74-yard touchdown pass from Blayk Thomas to De’Von Minor, cutting the deficit to 28-14.

West Liberty-Salem responded with a 17-yard touchdown run by Sullivan to extend its lead to 35-14.

The Tigers added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Krabill broke loose for a 38-yard scoring run, and Josiah Johnson sealed the win with a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown.

West Liberty-Salem finished with 420 yards of total offense, including 266 rushing yards and 154 passing yards.

Krabill led the Tigers on the ground with 211 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Sullivan completed 10 of 15 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown while adding two rushing touchdowns.

Kidd caught one pass for 33 yards and a touchdown, while Bieleski added a rushing touchdown.

The Tigers’ defense also made an impact, returning an interception for a touchdown and forcing two turnovers.

Triad finished with 316 total yards, including 266 passing yards and 50 rushing yards. Thomas threw for 255 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice.

Riverside (7-1) 34, Troy Christian (3-5) 6

Riverside improved to 7-1 Friday night with a 34-6 win over Troy Christian, using a powerful ground game to control the matchup.

The Pirates opened the scoring in the first quarter when Gunner Carpenter broke through for a nine-yard touchdown run. Demenick Wise added the extra point to give Riverside a 7-0 lead.

Riverside extended its advantage in the second quarter when Justin Mazariegos scored on a seven-yard run. Dylan Trimble followed with a 44-yard touchdown run to put the Pirates ahead 20-0.

Troy Christian got on the scoreboard with a 48-yard field goal from Austen Taylor, making it 20-3.

Trimble added another touchdown in the third quarter, scoring on a three-yard run to extend Riverside’s lead to 27-3.

Taylor connected on a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Troy Christian’s final points, but Carpenter answered with a six-yard touchdown run to secure the 34-6 victory.

Riverside finished with an impressive 474 rushing yards on 43 carries and totaled 25 first downs. The Pirates accomplished that despite not completing a single pass. Quarterback Brody Orsborne went 0-for-7 passing and threw one interception.

Mazariegos led the Pirates with 181 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Carpenter added 125 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, while Trimble finished with 116 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

The Riverside defense also came up with two turnovers, including an interception, while limiting Troy Christian to 138 total yards.
