BASEBALL
Urbana 9, London 1
Urbana wasted no time taking control and rode a dominant pitching performance from the Lantz brothers to a 9-1 win over London.
Grady Lantz set the tone on the mound, going six strong innings while allowing just one run on three hits, striking out eight and walking two. Tate Lantz came on in the seventh to close it out, surrendering no hits and allowing just one baserunner on a walk.
Offensively, the Hillclimbers did all their damage early. After Brody Donahoe singled with one out in the first, Grady Lantz followed with an RBI double to open the scoring. Two batters later, Bentley Cordial launched a two-run homer to left to make it 3-0.
London answered with a run in the bottom of the first on a steal of home, but Urbana responded with a six-run explosion in the second inning. Carter Houseman drove in a run on a ground ball, and Donahoe later ripped a two-run hit to extend the lead. Cordial capped the inning with his second home run of the game—a three-run blast—to push the advantage to 9-1.
Both teams had chances the rest of the way but couldn’t capitalize, as the score held the rest of the game.
Cordial finished with two home runs and five RBIs, while Donahoe went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Urbana improves to 8-5 and will face Graham on Friday, with the game available live on PeakofOhioTV.
North Union 2, Graham 1 (Suspended, Bottom 2nd)
The game between North Union and Graham was suspended in the bottom of the second inning due to severe weather.
Graham struck first on an RBI groundout from Levi Hollingsworth with the bases loaded. North Union answered in the bottom of the first with a pair of two-out RBI singles to take a 2-1 lead.
Graham left a runner stranded after a leadoff single in the second, and North Union had runners on first and second before play was halted.
A makeup date has not yet been announced.
SOFTBALL
London 7, Urbana 6
Urbana’s comeback effort came up just short as London secured a 7-6 walk-off win in a dramatic finish.
London opened the scoring in the second inning and extended the lead to 5-0 in the fourth with a combination of timely hits, including an RBI double and a run-scoring groundout.
Urbana answered in a big way in the sixth, erupting for five runs to tie the game. The Lady Hillclimbers strung together four consecutive RBI doubles from Bailee Packer, Morgan Boyd, Maley Pine, and Lillian Webb to even things at five.
London regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of infield errors to go back in front 6-5.
Urbana responded again in the seventh. Packer reached on an error, Boyd singled, and Pine delivered a game-tying RBI to knot the score at six.
In the bottom half, London loaded the bases with two outs. On a full count and the eighth pitch of the at-bat, a difficult infield play couldn’t be handled, allowing the winning run to score.
Boyd led Urbana with three hits and two RBIs, while Pine added two hits and two RBIs. Chlose Easterday also recorded a two-hit game.
Urbana falls to 9-6 and will face Graham on Friday.
North Union 5, Graham 0 (Suspended, Top 3rd)
The matchup between North Union and Graham was suspended in the top of the third inning due to inclement weather, with North Union leading 5-0.
All five runs came in the second inning, fueled by four singles, two walks, and a sacrifice fly.
Graham had early opportunities, leaving the bases loaded in the first and hitting into a double play after a leadoff single in the second.
The game was halted with one out in the third shortly after a Malynn Bacher double.
A makeup date has yet to be announced.
