The fourth annual Erroll Broud Memorial Golf Scramble raised $42,000 this year to help 10 families facing financial hardship across Champaign, Logan, Shelby and Union counties.
The event was held August 22 at Lakeland Golf Club in St. Paris, with 19 teams and 76 golfers participating. The scramble was presented by Urbana Eagles No. 979 and Sidney Eagles No. 1403.
The event was established in 2023 by Allen Broud in memory of his father, Erroll Broud, who enjoyed golf and helping others.
The first scramble involved 20 golfers and assisted one family. Participation increased to 40 golfers in 2024 and 72 golfers in 2025, when three families received assistance.
This year’s event expanded the effort to 10 families in four counties. The recipients were nominated through community organizations that work with people experiencing financial hardship.
Nominating organizations included Mercy Mission House Emergency Shelter, Charity League, Compassionate Care of Shelby County Inc., Bridges Community Action Partnership, Mercy Health, the Marysville Fire Division, United Way of Logan County and Caring Kitchen Inc.
The families receiving assistance are dealing with a range of circumstances, including serious medical conditions, loss of income, housing instability, domestic violence, and other financial difficulties.
The money raised is being used to help with immediate expenses, including medical costs, housing, transportation, and other necessities.
The memorial scramble operates as a nonprofit and is volunteer-run. Organizers said funds raised through the event go directly toward assisting recipient families.
Mike Piatt, Roger Chester, Tom Karn and Scott Cates finished first in this year’s scramble.
The fifth annual Erroll Broud Memorial Golf Scramble is scheduled for August 21, 2027, at Lakeland Golf Club in St. Paris. Registration for next year’s event is expected to open June 1.
