Bellefontaine’s Gracie Hood earned a spot on Team USA Friday after an outstanding performance at the 2026 Junior Gold Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Hood finished second overall through the tournament’s 26-game qualifying and Advancer Rounds, securing the No. 2 seed in the championship bracket and earning one of the coveted Team USA positions awarded at the Junior Gold Championships.
Competing on some of the tournament’s toughest oil patterns Friday, Hood never surrendered second place. She opened the Advancer Round with games of 224, 225, 117, 183 and 196 for a 945 series before adding games of 141, 187, 197, 157 and 150 for an 832 series in the afternoon.
Her final total of 5,225 pins over 26 games gave her a 200.96 average for the week and left her 25 pins above the tournament’s scoring pace. She finished just 160 pins behind tournament leader Taylor Kretz of Erie, Pennsylvania, who claimed the top seed entering match play.
The top 16 bowlers advanced into Friday evening’s double-elimination championship bracket. As the No. 2 seed, Hood opened against 15th-seeded Grace Zuerner of Terre Haute, Indiana. Despite the loss, Hood remained alive in the double-elimination format and moved into the contenders bracket.
Hood then battled Layna Linker of Kannapolis, North Carolina, in an elimination match. The contest remained close throughout before Linker edged Hood 431-428 in the closing frames, ending Hood’s run for the national title.
Although her tournament ended in match play, Hood’s performance throughout the week ranked among the nation’s best. She held onto second place through all 26 qualifying and Advancer Round games, earned the No. 2 seed for the championship bracket, and secured a coveted Team USA berth.
The accomplishment caps an exceptional week for Hood, who finished second through 26 games against one of the strongest youth bowling fields in the country. Her consistency from the opening day of qualifying through the demanding Advancer Rounds earned her the opportunity to represent the United States while adding another milestone to an already impressive bowling career.
