Indians wins Granville district, Lakers lead finishes in St. Paris; Saturday boys track & field

Area boys track and field athletes delivered strong performances Saturday, May 23, at multiple OHSAA district meets, with several teams capturing district titles and dozens of athletes earning regional berths. Mechanicsburg highlighted the day by winning the Division V district championship at Granville, while West Liberty-Salem claimed its fifth consecutive Division IV district title in Troy. Athletes from Indian Lake, Urbana, Benjamin Logan, Graham, Calvary Christian, Riverside, and other area programs also turned in standout performances as the top four finishers in each event advanced to regional competition.

OHSAA Division V District – Granville

Mechanicsburg Boys – District Champions (121 points)

Mechanicsburg captured the Division V district championship in dominant fashion, totaling 121 points behind multiple event titles, relay qualifiers, and strong field-event performances.

Beckett Negley led the Indians with district championships in both distance races, winning the 1600 meters in 4:25.80 and the 3200 meters in 9:47.55. Negley also added a runner-up finish in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 1:57.53.

Austin Haynes delivered another outstanding meet for Mechanicsburg, sweeping the hurdle events with district titles in the 110 hurdles in 15.82 and the 300 hurdles in 41.43. Haynes also qualified for regionals in high jump by clearing a personal-best 6-2 to finish runner-up.

Mechanicsburg qualified for regionals in several relay events. The 4×200 relay team of Tevin Mitchell, Connor Shultz, Lyric Norris, and Austin Haynes placed fourth in 1:36.34. The 4×800 relay squad of Adrian Miller, Connor Shultz, Dmitri Pack, and Beckett Negley also advanced with a fourth-place finish in 8:59.74.

Connor Shultz added a regional-qualifying fourth-place finish in the 400 meters and later captured a district championship in pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 11-0. Oliver Smith gave Mechanicsburg another regional qualifier in pole vault with a runner-up finish at 10-6.

In the field events, Mark Clyburn qualified for regionals with a runner-up finish in long jump at 19-7.5, while Josh Titus advanced in high jump with a third-place clearance of 6-0.

Additional contributions came from Levi Wheeler with a runner-up finish in the 100 meters, Blake Davis in discus, Tevin Mitchell in long jump, and multiple relay contributors as Mechanicsburg secured the district title.

OHSAA Division III District – St. Paris

Indian Lake – 10th Place (35 points)

Indian Lake finished 10th overall and was led by standout performances in the hurdles, relays, throws, and field events.

Freshman Gavin Henry advanced to regionals with a runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles in 15.18. Henry also added a fifth-place finish in the 300 hurdles, while teammate Jordan Henderson competed in both the 1600 and 300 hurdles.

The Lakers earned a strong fifth-place finish in the 4×400 relay as Will Faler, Kade Richardson, Aidan Stinebaugh, and Silas Holbrook combined to run 3:30.78.

In the field events, Christopher Timms qualified for regionals with a runner-up finish in shot put at 52-1 and later added an eighth-place finish in discus. Carter Barnett also advanced with a fourth-place finish in long jump at 19-9.5.

Will Faler added another strong performance with a fifth-place finish in pole vault, while Aidan Stinebaugh placed eighth in the 400 meters.

Additional contributions came from Nathan White in the 3200 and pole vault, Blake Sell in high jump, Lucas Chamberlin in discus, and Cason Lacher in the 800 meters as the Lakers scored across multiple events.

Urbana – 12th Place (28 points)

Urbana placed 12th overall behind strong performances in the distance races, relays, and throwing events.

Senior Vincent Lightle led the Hillclimbers with a runner-up finish in the 3200 meters in 9:46.81. Urbana also qualified for regionals in the 4×800 relay as Zachary Nutt, Brian Chamberlain, Pryce Bass, and Vincent Lightle combined to place third in 8:30.02.

Crew Forson earned a regional berth in shot put with a fourth-place throw of 48-5.25 and later added a sixth-place finish in discus. Lucas Flora also contributed in both throwing events, placing eighth in shot put and 15th in discus.

On the track, Pryce Bass finished seventh in the 400 meters, while Zachary Nutt added a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters. Brian Chamberlain narrowly missed a scoring finish in the 400 meters by placing ninth.

Additional performances came from Sam Wojtaszek in the 200 meters, Anthony Keeran in the 800 and 4×400 relay, and Landon McKellop in the 3200 meters.

Benjamin Logan – 14th Place (25 points)

Benjamin Logan finished 14th overall and was highlighted by a district championship from Carter Daniels in pole vault.

Daniels cleared a personal-best 15-7 to win the district title and advance to regionals. Roman Maxwell also nearly qualified in two field events, placing fifth in long jump and tying for 11th in high jump.

Cooper Buck turned in a strong postseason meet in the hurdles, placing fifth in the 110 hurdles with a personal-best 16.38. Gavin Jordan added a ninth-place finish in the 800 meters.

Benjamin Logan’s relay teams also contributed heavily to the scoring. The 4×400 relay team of Tyler Shoopman, Cooper Buck, Gavin Jordan, and Davis Matthews placed seventh, while the 4×800 relay team of Gavin Jordan, Brock Henry, Luke Vesely, and Tyler Shoopman finished fifth.

In the throws, Gus Bibart placed ninth in discus and shot put, while Asher Boysel added a 17th-place finish in shot put. Nathanael Mitchell also competed in discus.

Additional contributions came from Luke Vesely and Greyson Butler in the distance races, Carter Buck and Wyatt Predmore in the sprint relays, and Joe Meeker in long jump.

Graham – 16th Place (12 points)

Graham Local finished 16th overall and was led by Sullivan Uhl’s regional-qualifying performance in the hurdles.

Uhl placed third in the 300 hurdles with a personal-best time of 41.06 to earn a trip to regionals. He also added a seventh-place finish in the 110 hurdles.

Zackary Estep narrowly missed regional qualification in high jump, placing fifth with a clearance of 6-0. Jesse Jenkins contributed in both the 200 meters and long jump.

The Falcons also received contributions from Andrew Clark and Logan Pitsinger in the throwing events, while Alexander Daubenspeck competed in the distance races and pole vault.

Graham Local’s relay teams added experience throughout the meet, highlighted by the 4×800 relay squad of Hunter Demarco, Jared Ekey, Maddex Cushard, and Alexander Daubenspeck.

OHSAA Division V District – Piqua

Calvary Christian – 11th Place (20 points)

Calvary Christian finished 11th overall behind strong performances in the middle-distance races and relay events.

Freshman John Gaertner led the Spartans with a regional-qualifying third-place finish in the 800 meters, running a personal-best 1:58.89. Teammate Aydan Knox also turned in a personal-best effort in the event, placing ninth in 2:07.45.

Calvary Christian qualified for regionals in both distance relays. The 4×400 relay team of Brett Gilldow, John Gaertner, Elias Peterson, and Aydan Knox placed fourth in 3:33.30 to secure a regional berth. The 4×800 relay team of Aydan Knox, Benaiah Soma, Brett Gilldow, and John Gaertner also advanced with a third-place finish in 8:28.54.

Gilldow added an individual scoring performance in the 400 meters, placing sixth with a personal-best time of 52.05. Benaiah Soma contributed in the 3200 meters, while Elias Peterson also competed in long jump.

Riverside

Riverside did not record a team score but received individual performances from Aiden Fout, Joel Brooks, and Cruz Parker.

Fout competed in both distance races, placing 14th in the 1600 meters and 15th in the 3200. Brooks competed in shot put, while Parker recorded a personal-best throw in discus.
