OHSAA District Final

Taylor 6, Indian Lake 0

The Indian Lake Lakers’ season came to a close in a 6-0 shutout loss to the Taylor Yellow Jackets in the OHSAA District Final.

Indian Lake had opportunities throughout the afternoon, but could not capitalize against Taylor ace Ellie Stafford, who struck out 14 batters in a complete-game shutout performance.

The Lakers went down in order in the top of the first with three straight strikeouts before Taylor struck first in the bottom half.

A pair of singles put two runners aboard before an infield hit brought home the opening run. Taylor attempted to score a second on the play, but Indian Lake cut the runner down at the plate as second baseman Izzi Mackesy fired home to catcher Kelsey Traylor for the tag out, keeping it a 1-0 game after one inning.

Bre Wisener settled in after the opening frame, retiring the side in order in both the second and third innings.

Indian Lake threatened in the second after Kyler Carruthers singled, Annie Rapp reached on an error, and Brylee Buyer walked to load the bases with nobody out. However, the next three batters all struck out to end the inning.

The Lakers loaded the bases again in the third as MacKenzie Miller and Wisener opened the inning with singles before Carruthers drew a one-out walk. Rapp later fouled out to the catcher in foul territory, and Buyer struck out swinging to end another scoring chance. Through three innings, eight of Taylor’s first nine outs came by strikeout.

After Indian Lake went down in order in the fourth, Taylor broke the game open with a five-run inning.

A single and a double quickly put runners in scoring position before a sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in everybody reaching safely, while another run scored. A walk later loaded the bases before Wisener was relieved by Carruthers. Another walk forced in a run, a wild pitch brought home another, and Taylor later added an RBI groundout and RBI double to extend the lead to 6-0. The Lakers prevented further damage by throwing out the batter at third, trying to stretch the double into a triple.

Indian Lake threatened once more in the fifth when Miller led off with a double, but the Lakers could not bring her home. The final six Indian Lake batters were retired in order as Taylor secured the district championship.

Wisener took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two over three innings. Carruthers tossed the final three innings, surrendering one run on three hits and two walks.

Miller led the Lakers with two hits, while Wisener and Carruthers each added one. Carruthers drew two walks, and Buyer added another.

Indian Lake closes the season with a 12-16 record.
