Urbana handed Jonathan Alder its first loss of the season Friday night, rallying for a dramatic 28-27 win.
The Hillclimbers led 14-0 at halftime.
The teams traded touchdowns in the second half, with Urbana holding a 21-7 lead before Jonathan Alder found its momentum.
The Pioneers scored 20 unanswered points to take a 27-21 lead with 46 seconds remaining. Jonathan Alder’s go-ahead touchdown came after an interception, but the extra point was missed, leaving Urbana within six.
The Hillclimbers then put together a 75-yard scoring drive in just 36 seconds.
Grady Lantz opened the drive with a completion to Drew Dixon, then connected with Tate Lantz on two passes to move the ball to the Jonathan Alder 24-yard line.
With three seconds left, Lantz found Carter Houseman along the left sideline. Houseman caught the pass at the three-yard line and tightroped into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.
The extra point was good, giving Urbana the 28-27 victory and handing Jonathan Alder its first loss of the season.
Jonathan Alder still had one final chance, but Urbana’s defense stopped a hook-and-lateral play to seal the win.
Lantz finished with 353 passing yards and four touchdown passes, along with two interceptions. He also rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown.
Urbana improves to 5-2, while Jonathan Alder falls to 6-1.
98.3 WPKO Logan County Game of the Week
West Liberty-Salem (4-2) 35, Northeastern (1-6) 0
West Liberty-Salem improved to 4-2 Friday night with a 35-0 shutout win over Northeastern.
The Tigers got on the board early when Beckett Sullivan connected with Sam Kidd for a 42-yard touchdown pass. Sullivan then found Grant Krabill for a 17-yard touchdown later in the first quarter, giving West Liberty-Salem a 14-0 lead.
Krabill added another touchdown in the second quarter, this time on a 66-yard punt return.
The Tigers extended their lead just before halftime when Silas Krabill scored on an 11-yard touchdown run, making it 28-0.
Zade Bieleski added a 13-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to cap the scoring.
West Liberty-Salem’s defense held Northeastern to just 115 total yards, including only 33 rushing yards. The Tigers also forced three turnovers, with Grant Krabill recording two interceptions and Josiah Johnson adding another.
Sullivan completed 13 of 16 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns.
Krabill caught six passes for 71 yards and a touchdown, while Bieleski led the rushing attack with 54 yards and a touchdown. Silas Krabill added 46 rushing yards and a score.
West Liberty-Salem finished with 294 total yards.
London (5-2) 56, Bellefontaine (1-6) 7
London beat Bellefontaine Friday night, rolling to a 56-7 win over the Chiefs.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back.
London’s ground game was led by Bryston Toronto, who rushed for 130 yards on 22 carries and five touchdowns.
Isaiah Near also had a big night, rushing for 101 yards on just four carries. He broke loose for a 54-yard run and added a 34-yard touchdown.
Bellefontaine finally got on the board in the closing minute of the first half.
Aven Caudill initially connected with CJ Butler for a 25-yard touchdown, but the play was called back for holding. On the very next play, the Chiefs ran the same play, and Caudill again found Butler — this time for a 35-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left before halftime.
Caudill completed 10 of 19 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. He also added 11 rushing yards.
Bryant Carter led the Chiefs on the ground with 11 carries for 15 yards.
Bellefontaine was held to just 155 yards of total offense.
Other Local Games
North Union (5-2) 28, Benjamin Logan (3-4) 26
North Union improved to 5-2 Friday night with a 28-26 win over Benjamin Logan, handing the Raiders another one-score loss.
North Union built a 28-6 lead behind four touchdowns from Cain Holloway before Benjamin Logan mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback.
Holloway scored twice on the ground and twice through the air, including touchdown receptions of 34 and six yards from Hudson Bugg.
Benjamin Logan got on the board with 16 seconds left in the first half when Adam Tinsman connected with Micah Gregg for a 10-yard touchdown pass.
The Raiders cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter when Jordan Pender scored on a seven-yard touchdown run with 3:18 remaining.
Shortly after the touchdown, the stadium lights went out with 2:35 left in the game.
Once play resumed, Benjamin Logan kept the comeback going. Cooper Buck returned a North Union punt 71 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 28-20.
The Raiders then recovered an onside kick and scored again when Rhett Newman ran for a one-yard touchdown with 55 seconds left.
Benjamin Logan went for two, but the attempt failed, leaving North Union with a 28-26 lead.
The Raiders attempted another onside kick, but North Union recovered and ran out the clock.
Benjamin Logan finished with 234 total yards, including 132 passing and 102 rushing. Adam Tinsman completed 15 of 31 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown.
Pender led the Raiders on the ground with 73 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while Newman added 14 yards and a score.
Cooper Buck had three catches for 46 yards and also provided the big special-teams play with his 71-yard punt return touchdown.
North Union finished with 369 total yards, including 284 rushing.
Riverside (6-1) 40, Northridge (2-5) 18
Riverside improved to 6-1 Friday night with a 40-18 win over Northridge.
The Pirates got on the board first when Dylan Trimble scored on a one-yard touchdown run with just over a minute left in the first quarter. Demenick Wise added the extra point to make it 7-0.
Northridge answered in the second quarter when Tyree Carter scored on a six-yard touchdown run to tie the game.
Riverside regained the lead when Brody Orsborne connected with Justin Mazariegos for a 36-yard touchdown pass.
Carter scored again for Northridge later in the quarter, but the Pirates answered quickly. Mazariegos broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown run, giving Riverside a 19-12 lead at halftime.
Riverside added to its lead in the third quarter when Gunner Carpenter scored on a 29-yard touchdown run.
Carpenter found the end zone again early in the fourth quarter on a five-yard touchdown run, putting the Pirates ahead 33-12.
Northridge cut into the lead when Carter connected with Mekhi Tyree for a six-yard touchdown pass, but Riverside answered once again.
Carpenter capped the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown run with just under three minutes remaining.
Carpenter finished with 121 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. Trimble added 105 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Mazariegos rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown and caught a 36-yard touchdown pass.
Riverside finished with 369 total yards, including 312 on the ground.
The Pirates also forced two turnovers, with Brody Orsborne recording both interceptions.
Indian Lake (4-3) 46, Shawnee (2-5) 14
Indian Lake improved to 4-3 Friday night with a 46-14 win over Shawnee.
The Lakers opened the scoring in the first quarter when Jordan Henderson broke loose for a 22-yard touchdown run. Rush Hurley added the extra point to make it 7-0.
Indian Lake exploded in the second quarter, scoring 32 points to take a 39-6 lead into halftime.
Brady Golldiay got the scoring started with an 85-yard touchdown pass to Brodey Reisinger. Shawnee answered with an 85-yard kickoff return by Brock Greenstein, but the Lakers continued to pull away.
Henderson added a one-yard touchdown run, followed by a six-yard touchdown run from Golldiay.
Golldiay then connected with Blake Sell for a 12-yard touchdown and found JJ Shirk for a 34-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left in the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Nixon Lillard added a three-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to put the Lakers ahead 46-6.
Shawnee scored with 30 seconds left when Haden Chilcote ran for a 16-yard touchdown. Landon Cattell added the two-point conversion for the final score.
The Indian Lake defense was a major part of the win, holding Shawnee to just 77 total yards — 22 passing and 55 rushing.
Golldiay completed 12 of 16 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Reisinger led the Lakers with 167 receiving yards and a touchdown on eight catches.
Henderson rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.
Indian Lake totaled 514 yards of offense, including 297 passing and 217 rushing.
