Stokes returns to Urbana, named as high school’s head football coach

Urbana City Schools (UCS) has announced the hiring of Geron Stokes as the next head football coach at Urbana High School, bringing back a familiar and highly accomplished leader to the Hillclimbers’ football program.

Superintendent Charles Thiel confirmed the hire, citing Stokes’ extensive experience and proven success at the highest levels of Ohio high school football.

Stokes has led several prominent programs throughout his career, including Urbana High School, Minster High School, and Dublin Coffman High School, compiling a reputation as one of the state’s most respected coaches. His career includes two OHSAA state championships and an overall head coaching record of 125–69.

A graduate of Urbana High School, Stokes’ return represents a homecoming to the community where he first made his mark as both a student-athlete and coach. After playing quarterback at Urbana and competing collegiately, Stokes built a successful career as an educator and football coach, emphasizing leadership, discipline, and accountability.

District officials highlighted that Stokes’s impact extends far beyond wins and losses. Known for developing student-athletes both on and off the field, his coaching philosophy strongly aligns with the values of Urbana City Schools and its athletic programs.

Stokes will assume his coaching duties immediately as he begins preparations for the upcoming football season and the continued growth of the Hillclimbers program.

commitment to excellence have produced consistent competitive success, culminating in two
state championships and an overall coaching record of 125–69.

Beyond the wins and titles, Coach Stokes is widely respected for his ability to develop studentathletes both on and off the field. His emphasis on discipline, accountability, and character aligns strongly with the values of our district and athletic program.
