WL-S sixth grade boys battle in Red Raider Winter Slam; middle school basketball finals

Several area youth basketball teams turned in strong performances over the weekend and into Monday night, highlighted by a runner-up finish at a holiday tournament, a road victory for Riverside, and a sweep of Greenon by West Liberty-Salem’s girls programs. From tournament play to conference matchups, local teams continue to build momentum as the winter season rolls on.

WL-S 6th Grade Boys Finish Runner-Up at Winter Slam

The West Liberty-Salem 6th grade boys basketball team went 2–1 at the Red Raider Winter Slam Tournament, finishing runner-up to Urbana. The Tigers defeated London and Greeneview, but fell to Urbana in tournament play.

Game 1 vs. London:
Braxton Louden led the way with 17 points, followed by Isaac Fallon with seven. Hayes Robison added four, Maddax Dobberstein three, Jackson Barth two, and Ozzy Anders one.

Game 2 vs. Urbana:
Ozzy Anders and Parker Knight each scored five points.

Game 3 vs. Greeneview:
Braxton Louden poured in 21 points, with Isaac Fallon adding eight. Parker Knight and Ozzy Anders each scored two, while Maddax Dobberstein and Jackson Barth chipped in one apiece.

Several area teams will be back in action later this week as the winter sports season continues across the region.

Riverside 7th Grade Girls Pick Up Road Win

The Riverside 7th grade girls basketball team earned a 19–8 victory over Miami East.

Erica Blair and Brylee Shepherd led the Lady Pirates with six points apiece. Emma Schneider added four points, while Kinsley Crawford finished with three. Bella Shultz and Avery Wheeler anchored the defensive effort in the win.

West Liberty-Salem Girls Sweep Greenon

The West Liberty-Salem 7th grade girls basketball team picked up a road win Monday night, defeating Greenon 40–22 to improve their record to 4–2. The Tigers are back in action January 5 at home against Cedarville, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.

The 8th grade girls also earned a win, edging Greenon 25–20 to improve to 5–1 on the season. They will also host Cedarville on January 5.

Scoring for the 8th grade Tigers included:

  • Bella Johnson – 10 points

  • Lilly Yeater – 7 points

  • Rylie Falloon – 7 points

  • Erin Leichty – 2 points

  • Avery Brown – 1 point
