A Bellefontaine man is facing OVI charges after crashing a commercial truck Thursday evening on State Route 540.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office reports the crash happened just after 7 p.m. when a caller reported a utility truck had gone off the road and the driver appeared to be intoxicated.

The driver was allegedly attempting to get the vehicle out of the ditch, causing the truck’s tires to smoke.

Deputies arrived to find a 2017 Ford F-550 stuck in the tree line with visible damage.

Several trees were also damaged in the crash.

The driver, 49-year-old Joseph Adkins of Bellefontaine, had been traveling west on State Route 540 when he went off the right side of the road, struck a ditch, and hit the tree line.

Deputies said Adkins showed signs of impairment and failed field sobriety tests.

He was arrested and taken to the Logan County Jail, where a breath test showed his blood alcohol concentration at 0.276—more than three times the legal limit of 0.08.

Adkins was booked on OVI charges and cited for failure to control.
