Child dies following swimming pool incident in Champaign County

The following is from a press release issued by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office regarding the July 4, 2026, swimming pool incident on Game Farm Road.

On July 4, 2026, deputies from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Game Farm Road following a report that a 2-year-old child had been pulled from a swimming pool and was not breathing.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies immediately began lifesaving efforts, including CPR, until EMS personnel arrived and assumed medical care. The child was transported from the scene to Mercy Urbana Hospital.

Deputies remained at the residence to conduct an investigation. Witnesses were interviewed, evidence was documented, and surveillance video from the property was collected while investigators processed the scene.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office has since confirmed that the 2-year-old child later died.

The incident remains under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, and no additional information is being released at this time.

The sheriff’s office asked the public to keep the child, the family, and all those affected by the incident in their thoughts.
