A late filing change reshaped the Champaign County ballot ahead of the May 5 primary election.

Republican County Commissioner Nino Vitale filed to run for Champaign County Auditor, while longtime Auditor Karen Bailey submitted petitions to seek Vitale’s commissioner seat. Vitale will run unopposed in the May Republican primary for auditor. Bailey will face Democrat Jacob McKee in the race for county commissioner, pending certification by the Board of Elections on Feb. 17.

Vitale announced his candidacy on social media, citing his business background and legislative experience. Bailey also announced she would not seek another term as auditor, saying she is leaving the office in strong condition.

Two judicial races — Domestic Relations, Juvenile, and Probate Court Judges Lori Reisinger and Brett Gilbert — will be unopposed in the Republican primary. No Democrats filed for the seats.

The deadline to file as an independent candidate is May 4. Certified candidates and issues will appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.
