Bellefontaine City Council Talks Interim Chief & New Ordinances

The Bellefontaine City Council met Tuesday evening.

Mayor Ben Stahler informed the council that a local man, Phil Beasley, passed away recently and asked the group to observe a moment of silence in his honor. Beasley was the Service Safety Director for the City of Bellefontaine from 1983-1995.

Mayor Stahler explained that Bellefontaine Police Chief Brandon Standley will be retiring on April 7, 2023, and a retirement open house will be held at the council chamber on Thursday, April 6, 2023, from 1 PM – 3 PM. Interim Chief Chris Marlow spoke with the council and expressed his gratitude for their support:

 

Lt. Chris Marlow is a lifelong resident of Logan County and is a familiar face as he steps into the role of Interim Chief of Police. Marlow currently serves as a Lieutenant with the BPD. He brings more than 26 years of experience with the BPD serving in many roles, including Patrolman, K-9 handler, Sergeant, Special Response Team, and his current role Lieutenant. Marlow also has extensive law enforcement education and training, including his B.S. In Criminal Justice/Leadership and an M.S. In Criminal Justice Administration. Marlow is also a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College and the Certified Law Enforcement Executive Program.

 

Mayor Stahler outlined the next step in finding a permanent chief for the City of Bellefontaine Police Department:

 

 

The city council approved and adopted several ordinances:

  • The second and final reading: An ordinance authorizing the Service Safety Director and Police Chief to hire one full-time temporary dispatcher for the PD.
  • The second and final reading: An ordinance accepting the application of annexation of certain territory/real estate to the city of Bellefontaine, owned by Levan Investments LLC.
  • The second and final reading: An ordinance making the permanent appropriations for current expenses and other expenditures for the fiscal year. (4.5% increase)
  • The second and final reading: An ordinance authorizing and directing the Service Safety Director/Fire Chief to apply for and accept 2023 assistance to Firefighters Grant Funding for a fire/rescue truck. ($950,000 total, with a $50,000 local match.)

There will be a public zoning hearing regarding a property owned by Robinson investments, on North Main Street, just south of Reynolds Avenue, on April 25, 2023, at 7 PM in the council chambers.
