Registrations are now open for the 2026 Community Garden season through the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District.
In partnership with the Logan County Master Gardeners, the Troy Road Community Garden offers residents a shared space to grow fresh produce, connect with neighbors, and enjoy the outdoors.
The garden is located on Troy Road between Sandusky Avenue and Railroad Street in Bellefontaine. Individual plots measuring 4 feet by 25 feet are available for the upcoming season, which begins in spring 2026.
Participants are responsible for maintaining their own plots and are expected to follow all garden guidelines.
Water access is available on-site, and shared hand tools can be found in the equipment barn for gardeners to use.
Plots are limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
Organizers say the program is open to everyone—from experienced gardeners to those just getting started—and provides an opportunity to grow both healthy food and community connections.
Cheryl Elkins with the Logan County Master Gardeners explains more about the benefits of the program.
To reserve a plot, residents can visit the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District website or call their office at (937) 592-3475.
Questions can also be directed to the Logan County Master Gardeners at (937) 599-4227 or by email at [email protected].
A full list of guidelines and important dates will be provided following registration.
An orientation session is scheduled for Saturday, March 28th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Community Garden.
Important Dates:
- April 1: Planting begins (weather permitting)
- June 1: Plots subject to reassignment if not planted
- Summer season: Gardeners are expected to keep plots active and participate in educational opportunities
- October 31: All vegetation must be removed, and plots cleared
Plot Maintenance & Care:
Gardeners must keep all plants within their designated plot and ensure walkways remain clear. Taller crops should be positioned so they do not block neighboring sunlight. Regular weeding is required, and unkempt plots will receive a one-week notice before possible reassignment. Illegal or invasive plants, including cannabis, are not permitted.
Garden Health & Safety:
The garden is a tobacco-free zone to prevent the spread of Tobacco Mosaic Virus, and participants are encouraged to wash their hands before gardening if they use tobacco products. Diseased plants must be removed and disposed of promptly. Pets are not allowed. Any fertilizers or pesticides used must be applied carefully and according to label instructions to avoid impacting neighboring plots.
Water & Waste:
Standing water is not allowed due to mosquito concerns. Gardeners should not leave water running unattended or spray into other plots. All participants are expected to keep their plots and shared areas free of trash.
Community & Courtesy:
Gardeners may only harvest from their own plots. Excess produce is encouraged to be donated to local food pantries. Participants are also expected to volunteer for general garden upkeep, with tasks posted in the Garden Barn. Anyone needing to abandon their plot is asked to notify organizers at (937) 599-4227.
By registering for a plot, participants agree to follow all garden rules and guidelines.
