A Bellefontaine man was taken into custody after a reported domestic violence incident involving his 17-year-old daughter.

According to Bellefontaine Police, officers were called just after 6:00 PM Thursday to a home on North Park Road after a report of a family dispute.

Police were told the man, identified as 37-year-old William Burnell, had left the home in a silver Kia after allegedly assaulting his daughter.

Officers spoke with the teen and two people who witnessed the incident.

They were told Burnell may have gone to his workplace, where officers later found him and spoke with him.

Burnell admitted there had been an argument, and he went to the home to discipline his daughter.

He told police the situation turned physical after she talked back to him.

He said he slapped her and pushed her to the ground, claiming he was trying to stop her from hitting him.

Witnesses told officers a different story.

One witness said Burnell repeatedly hit the teen with his fists, and they yelled at him to stop.

Another witness said Burnell slapped her several times, slammed her head into a wall and the floor, and kept hitting her even as she tried to get away.

The teen was checked by medics for a possible concussion, and police noted she had minor injuries.

Later that night, officers arrested Burnell at his home.

He was taken to the Logan County Jail and charged with domestic violence.
