Early Saturday morning, Bellefontaine Police responded to reports of a severely damaged vehicle blocking East Sandusky Avenue.

The vehicle, described as being sideways in the road with its bumper barely attached and no visible license plate, was last seen turning south onto North Park Street.

Police later encountered the vehicle behind an officer’s car on West Williams Avenue.

The driver, identified as 23-year-old Austin Cantrell of Bellefontaine, appeared visibly intoxicated and claimed he was trying to get home.

Field sobriety tests confirmed his impairment, leading to his arrest.

At the Bellefontaine Police Department, Cantrell recorded a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .228, nearly three times the legal limit.

While awaiting paperwork, Cantrell fell asleep on a wooden bench.

Cantrell was transported to the Logan County Jail where he was charged with two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI).

He also faces citations for failing to obey traffic control devices, failure to control, two counts of stopping after an accident, and improper lane usage.

Police reconstructed Cantrell’s route, discovering damage from collisions with an RV, a stop sign, and a pole.

Cantrell, who has a prior OVI conviction from 2022, is facing significant legal consequences for this incident.
