Bellefontaine Police were dispatched to Rutan Park Wednesday night for a report of someone being injured after being shot by a BB gun.

Four witnesses said two named suspects showed up and just started shooting at them. At first, they feared the gun was real. One person was injured and went to Family Urgent Care in Bellefontaine. Three others said they were shot at but were not injured.

A back window in a Ford Escape was also shattered after being shot.

A description of the vehicle given by the witnesses allowed police to track down a suspect about 90 minutes later.

Police detained Donivon Smith of Bellefontaine.

Smith told authorities he and another person were blocked in by a white SUV at the park and that several individuals approached their vehicles. He said one person damaged his trunk before he and the other person were able to leave.

He denied having a BB gun. He claimed the other person had a BB gun, but couldn’t provide details.

Smith was placed under arrest for felonious assault, criminal damaging, unlawful possession of certain weapons, and discharging firearms within city limits.
