The Bellefontaine City Council met Tuesday evening in regular session.
Bellefontaine Mayor Ben Stahler reported to the council that the 2nd annual Downtown Bellefontaine Clean-up is set to celebrate on Earth Day, April 21st. Volunteers will get a free lunch from Six Hundred Downtown, a t-shirt, and one complimentary refreshment from Brewfontaine after the event. Sign up by Friday, April 14, to be guaranteed a t-shirt. Check-in is at 9:30 AM at the Main Street Marketplace. Volunteers can sign up at: https://downtownbellefontaine.com/cleanup/. Mayor Stahler explains more:
Ben Volrath, the President/CEO of the Logan County Economic Development, updated the council on a recent meeting with the Logan County Chamber of Commerce Legislative Impact meeting. The Logan County School Superintendent’s Panel consists of Scott Mann from Riverside, John Scheu from Benjamin Logan, Rob Underwood from Indian Lake, Rick Smith from Ohio Hi-Point Career Center, and Brad Hall from Bellefontaine City Schools. They told the group about how local schools are combatting mental health and helping those students seek proper care.
Bellefontaine Police Department’s Interim Chief Chris Marlow told the council that a new officer, Savarrah Crabtree, will be sworn in and is set to begin this week. Crabtree’s training with the department will be at least 12 weeks before she will patrol Bellefontaine on her own. Crabtree is the second female officer on the department’s staff roster. Marlow reminds the public that Bellefontaine City Schools will host an after-prom, in downtown Bellefontaine, on Saturday night beginning at 11 PM. It will include several downtown businesses and the department will have a heavy presence for safety, in addition to several parents.
The council went on to approve/adopt an ordinance on the first and final reading, authorizing the Service Safety Director to seek proposals/advertise for bids and enter into a contract with the selected contractor/bidders for the 2023 street paving and resurfacing project. Several other ordinances were approved on third readings, including accepting two grants from Walmart for the Special Response Team of the Bellefontaine Police Department totaling $8,000, and approving updates to the city employee handbook.
Kris Myers from the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District also plans spring clean-up dates for Camp Myeerah, and the first one is on Saturday, April 22nd from 8:30 am-noon. Volunteers can pre-register by calling the Parks Office at 937-592-3475. Myers explains:
