Bellefontaine School Board gets bleak funding picture from Treasurer

The Bellefontaine School Board met in regular session Monday night and received difficult news from District Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer Joshua Wasson. Wasson, while presenting the district’s Five-Year Plan, informed the board members of recent actions by the Ohio House of Representatives and Senate regarding funding for school districts.

According to Wasson, unless changes are made to the way the State releases funding, the district will likely begin deficit spending in school year 2027-2028. Wasson explained that after the recent overrides of Governor DeWine’s vetoes by both the upper and lower chambers in Columbus, the state is currently using numbers from 2022 to determine funding. These numbers do not adequately reflect the needs of the district, said Wasson.

There is a possibility the legislature will revisit the school funding issue before deficit spending becomes a reality, according to Wasson. When queried, Wasson noted that it is not just Bellefontaine that will be affected.

Before the treasurer’s report, the board heard from Bellefontaine Elementary Associate Principal Jordan Reser on the planned trips by the Robotics Teams. Reser said that there are several out-of-state trips planned for next school year and asked that the board approve the tentative schedule. Reser talks about the upcoming season:
