Bellefontaine’s iconic fountain revamped, welcomes Spring

On Thursday, workers from the City of Bellefontaine took advantage of the beautiful spring weather to revamp the concrete fountain in downtown.

Located in front of the Logan County Courthouse, originally installed in 1977, the fountain’s history is tied to an interesting twist of fate.

The original plan was to place a bell on top, symbolizing joy and new beginnings, in keeping with the city’s name, Bellefontaine, which sounds like “bell.”

However, a mix-up sent the ordered bell to Hawaii, and in return, Bellefontaine received a pineapple.

This unique swap has turned the pineapple into an iconic symbol of Bellefontaine.

The fountain, which has been a centerpiece of Bellefontaine’s downtown for decades, was turned back on Thursday, signaling the official arrival of spring.

Earlier in the week, on Earth Day, over 40 volunteers cleaned up downtown and got it ready for the busy upcoming season.
