Averi Lane, Benjamin Logan High School Class of 2022, has taken her love of music to the Ivy League level as a member of the Cornell University Symphony Orchestra.

As described by her bassoon professor, Dr. Christin Schillinger, “Founded in 1871 as the “University Orchestra,” Cornell Orchestras is one of the oldest organizations on campus. The ensembles are made of approximately 100 young musicians who audition for a board of music professors for a chance to join the storied ensembles. Averi Lane is one of three bassoonists accepted into Cornell Orchestras during the 2024-2025 academic year. As a member, Averi plays traditional favorites by composers including Joseph Haydn, Edward Elgar, and Johannes Brahms. She will also present new works by composers such as Missy Mazzoli, Caroline Shaw, and Brian Raphael Nabors. The orchestra rehearses twice weekly, and presents seven to eight concerts each year!

During Spring 2025, the ensemble will perform in the iconic New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, renowned for its outstanding acoustics and historic significance. Beyond the concert, members will engage with the local community through various outreach events, workshops, and performance classes. To accommodate the rigors of orchestral playing, many Cornell Orchestra musicians study their instruments with world-class Cornell music professors. Averi Lane is in her second year of bassoon study with bassoonist Dr. Christin Schillinger. In these meetings, Averi expands her abilities as a bassoonist, a musician, and a scholar.”

Averi is the daughter of Ryan and Shelly Lane and is majoring in Environmental Engineering. She credits her love for bassoon to her first bassoon instructor, Michael Suman, as well as her high school band director, Myles Bowers.
