The Benjamin Logan School Board met in regular session Monday night and recognized the first-ever Division 2 State Champion Boys Bowling team. Coach Barney Sullivan summarized the team’s season, culminating in the championship win over reigning champion Marion Pleasant.
Jarrett Buckenroth was named to First Team All-State and ranked the state’s 4th-best bowler in D2. Landon Stoodt earned All-State Honorable Mention and is ranked 12th in the state.
The board also recognized the April Seniors of the Month, Lexi Archer and Wyatt Blackburn.
Jeff Carr of the Environmental Design Group presented recent findings related to the district’s wastewater system. Carr advised the board that both the sewage treatment and water collection systems need repairs or, in some cases, replacement.
Originally constructed in 1987 and expanded in 1995, Carr discovered several areas of concern, including offset joints, sags, and concrete spalling were observed. Carr also recommended upgrading the electrical service to 3-phase for the entire plant. This would mean purchasing new blowers, but it should save the district money on electric charges.
Carr also provided the board with a list of recommended upgrades to the system.
In her report to the board, high school principal Annette Ramga-Alatorre informed the board that the Ohio Hi-Point Career Showcase is coming up on Tuesday and will inform freshmen about the offerings at OHP.
Also, the Robotics Team had a presentation to 8th graders and hosted an open house for families. She also said that end-of-course exams start on Wednesday and will last into May.
Middle school principal Todd Shadley said that changes to the cafeteria for both breakfast and lunch have allowed students to be served in a more timely manner. He also said that recent testing shows that close to 90% of students showed improvement from winter to spring.
Elementary school principal Holly Barr informed the board that 4th-grade testing revealed encouraging trends. She said that 63% of 4th graders are now reading at or above grade level, and 60% are on grade level in math.
This success also translated to 3rd-grade, with 77% reading at or above grade level and 51% on grade level in math. Both grades saw a decrease in the number of students who are 2+ years behind in both subjects.
