The Benjamin Logan Board of Education met in regular session Monday night and observed a moment of silence for the victims of the recent tornado in and around Lakeview.

First on the agenda was recognizing the March Seniors of the Month, Mylee Boysel and Joel Mitchell. Boysel is the daughter of Micah and Lora Boysel of Zanesfield and will attend Bowling Green State University in the fall to study architecture. Mitchell, who was on a college visit, is the son of Doug and Jenni Mitchell of Bellefontaine and will attend a university in the fall.

Superintendent John Scheu informed the board that several district staff have recently volunteered to help with clean-up efforts wherever they have been needed. Scheu has also been in contact with the Indian Lake Superintendent Rob Underwood to offer services or storage if the need arises. He also reminded the board that the United Way has been asking for supplies and donations and that is likely to continue for some time.

Jennifer Sudhoff, the Treasurer/CFO, presented the February 2024 Finance report along with other financial items, including the Bank Reconciliation and Financial Reports for February 2024, and all bills for the same month. The Board approved these reports and confirmed their alignment with a proper public purpose. Additionally, a fact sheet addressing frequently asked questions about voting during school board meetings was provided for general information.

Superintendent Scheu also provided the board with recommendations for hiring administrator positions and substitutes. Scheu said district policy has been to extend one- to three-year contracts to initial administrative hires. Once those contracts end, board policy dictates that administrators can be offered two- to five-year contracts. Scheu said that recently, administrators have been offered three-year contracts, providing a measure of job security.

The new hires were offered three-year contracts. The hires were approved, but board member Scott Spriggs objected to the length of the contracts, stating that he feels the contracts should be for two years.

Scheu discusses the recent administrator hires:

In the report of the Superintendent/Personnel, the Board approved the consent agenda for items B-E, which included various appointments for Administrative three-year contracts (August 1, 2024- July 31, 2027):

  • Colleen Bodin as Special Education Director (extending 2-year contract)
  • Holly Barr as ES Principal (extending 2-year contract)
  • Todd Shadley as MS Principal (extending 2-year contract)

Board member Scott Spriggs cast a negative vote in opposition to the duration of the contracts for the new hires.

Additionally, the Board approved the ESC substitute list for the 2023-2024 school year, contingent upon completion of all O.R.C. employment requirements, at the rate of $115 per day effective February 26, 2024.
