Benjamin Logan Schools Hosts First “Let’s Talk School” Community Event

On Tuesday evening, Benjamin Logan Schools Superintendent John Scheu, Treasurer Leah Baker, Board of Education President Mark Himmeger, and Vice President Deb Johnson held their inaugural “Let’s Talk School” community event, providing local residents with an opportunity to engage with school leadership and discuss key topics affecting the district.

The event highlighted the district’s academic performance, which received an overall rating of 4.5, indicating strong outcomes. The district achieved a score of 5 in gap closing, demonstrating effective measures to address educational disparities. While improvements in literacy were noted, it remains an area needing further attention. Additionally, the graduation rate is commendable, but ongoing efforts are required to ensure all students meet new graduation requirements.

Financial health was another focal point of the discussion. The district is projected to end the year in the black for the first time in seven years. The last Permanent Improvement (PI) levy was passed in 2009, and until its loan is paid off in 2027, the general fund will continue to cover necessary expenses. The implementation of zero-based budgeting has improved financial management, resulting in a healthier fiscal outlook. Furthermore, cost-saving measures, such as the reduction of two bus routes and successful negotiations with vendors, have contributed to better budget adherence.

Staffing and budgeting efficiency were also addressed. The district has achieved significant savings through natural attrition, and zero-based budgeting has streamlined financial management, helping stabilize the budget.

Looking ahead, the district may allocate PI funds for indoor and outdoor bleachers due to safety concerns. The importance of School Resource Officers (SROs) was emphasized, as they serve as the first line of defense for campus safety.

Community engagement was a key theme, with the last funding request made in 2000, underscoring the district’s commitment to fiscal responsibility. Since 2009, PI funds have been essential in maintaining school facilities while balancing the use of the general fund.

The group briefly discussed the potential modernization of the district’s Raider Head logo, aiming to refresh the design while preserving the district’s identity. The event fostered a positive atmosphere, with commendations for Superintendent Scheu and Treasurer Baker’s informative presentations. Updates to the cell phone policy also received positive feedback from the community.

Finally, the quality and dedication of both teaching and support staff were highlighted as critical contributors to the district’s academic successes. The Board expressed gratitude to the Belle Center Cornerstone Church for hosting the event and announced plans for future community gatherings in other Benjamin Logan communities, emphasizing ongoing engagement and communication.
