It was a weekend to remember for local music programs.

Bellefontaine High School recently hosted the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 11 Adjudicated Event for band and choir, featuring schools from multiple counties.

The BHS Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Brice Henry, earned a Superior rating of 1, the highest possible score.

This outstanding achievement qualifies them to perform at the OMEA State Contest in early May.

The BHS Symphonic Band, led by Ken Hoffman, also had a strong showing, earning an Excellent rating, just one point shy of qualifying for State.

OMEA rates bands and choirs on a scale of I to V:

  • I – Superior
  • II – Excellent
  • III – Acceptable
  • IV – Poor
  • V – Very Poor

Only groups earning a Superior rating of 1 advance to the state-level contest.

Adding to the weekend’s celebrations, the Bellefontaine High School Orchestra earned a Superior rating at State last month under the direction of Laura Mitchell.

Meanwhile, the Indian Lake High School Chorale earned an Excellent rating.

Director Mrs. Tracey Notestine expressed pride in this young group.

They will next perform at the Indian Lake Schools Spring Choir Concert on April 28th.

With top performances across choir, band, and orchestra, the BHS Music Department continues to set a high standard of excellence in the region, while nearby programs like Indian Lake also demonstrate the strength of local music education.
