Kerry Brugger, a key figure in the development of the Greenwood Arboretum at Oakdale Cemetery, spoke recently to the Urbana Lions Club about the project’s origins, progress, and completion.
The arboretum, which is owned and operated by the City of Urbana, opened its doors to the public in late 2023 after years of planning and development.
The project began in 2017 when a generous donation kickstarted the idea of creating a dedicated space for nature and education within the cemetery.
Brugger provided a detailed account of the arboretum’s history, including the community’s efforts to preserve local flora, educate visitors about tree species, and promote environmental awareness.
For more insight into the project, listen in as Brugger offers in-depth details:
Over 40 different species of trees are included in the arboretum.
