Monday evening, emergency responders were called to Carter Avenue in Bellefontaine following reports of a woman attempting to exit a moving vehicle.
The woman, identified as 43-year-old Rachel A. Garris, of Cable, was found sitting in the front passenger seat of a parked Kia, showing several signs of intoxication.
Witnesses reported that Garris had yanked the keys from the ignition while the vehicle was still in motion, prompting concerns for her safety.
Police noted a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person, and a bottle of vodka was found at her feet, about 75% full.
As authorities arrived, Garris began to experience breathing difficulties and mentioned having stage 3 lung cancer.
Emergency Medical Services were summoned, and Garris initially resisted going to the hospital. However, after being informed of her options, she agreed to be transported.
During the ambulance ride, Garris reportedly struggled with EMS personnel, attempting to remove medical equipment.
Upon arrival at Mary Rutan Hospital, she briefly became unresponsive but was stabilized shortly thereafter.
Police issued two criminal summonses for disorderly conduct due to intoxication and for possessing an open container of alcohol.
