A quiet early Monday morning turned into an unexpected roadside assist for a Champaign County Sheriff’s deputy, after coming across a disabled vehicle along the 3900 block of West U.S. Route 36.

Around 2:02 a.m., the deputy noticed a car pulled off to the side of the roadway and stopped to check on the driver, later identified as Shaden Shafer. Shafer explained he had been heading westbound when his front driver-side tire suddenly blew, leaving him stranded in the dark.

Rather than leaving the driver to wait for help, the deputy rolled up his sleeves and assisted Shafer with changing the tire. A few minutes later, the car was back in working order, and Shafer was able to safely continue his trip.

The deputy returned to service without further incident, marking another example of the everyday, behind-the-scenes assistance local deputies provide to keep county roadways safe.
