As Independence Day approaches and celebrations stretch into the next few weekends, Bellefontaine Police Chief Chris Marlow is reminding residents to celebrate responsibly—especially when it comes to alcohol and fireworks.

While Ohio law allows for certain firework displays across the state, the City of Bellefontaine has its own ordinance that strictly prohibits the possession and discharge of fireworks within city limits unless performed by a licensed exhibitor.

According to City Ordinance 1519.04, it is illegal for residents to possess, sell, or use fireworks in Bellefontaine without proper licensing.

This includes igniting fireworks on private property or in public spaces.

The ordinance also bans sales to anyone under 18 and restricts access to firework showrooms for minors without adult supervision.

Chief Marlow emphasizes that this law is in place for public safety and fire prevention, and the City of Bellefontaine differs from the state:

He also urges residents to drink responsibly during the holiday and plan ahead for a sober ride home if alcohol is involved.

As for when to call 911, Chief Marlow says it should be reserved for true emergencies: “If there’s an immediate danger to life or property—call us. But for fireworks complaints or noise issues, use the non-emergency number, (937) 599-1010.”

The Bellefontaine Police Department says they’re not out to ruin anyone’s celebration but are asking for cooperation to help keep the holiday safe for everyone.
