The Champaign County Fairgrounds is moving forward with a major upgrade, breaking ground Wednesday, Dec. 3 on a brand-new horse barn that will expand capacity and modernize the grounds.
The new facility will feature 108 stalls, matching the size of the existing barn on the east side of the property. It will be built directly north of that structure, giving the fairgrounds a more unified layout for equine events.
Fair officials say the project fills an important need. The grounds host four to five junior high rodeos each year, in addition to heavy use during the county fair and the flea markets. The extra stall space will help accommodate growing participation and ensure smoother operations during busy event weekends.
As part of long-term improvements, the pony barns on the south end of the property will be removed in the future due to their deteriorating condition.
Construction is already underway to have the new barn ready before the first rodeo in May. If weather or delays push the schedule, the goal is to have it up no later than the 2025 Champaign County Fair in August.
The project marks an exciting step forward for the fairgrounds as it continues expanding opportunities for youth exhibitors and rodeo competitors across the region.
Champaign County Fair President Wayne Cook provides comment on the plans for the new structure.
