Champaign County is taking steps to support first responders and families during traumatic events with the development of a local Crisis Intervention Stress Management (CISM) Team.

CISM is a program designed to provide immediate mental health assistance to those experiencing trauma, helping prevent long-term stress and emotional challenges. Several agencies in Champaign and Clark counties have been working together to establish a team capable of providing rapid support.

This week, employees from the Champaign County 911 Center and the Sheriff’s Office completed CISM certification through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). The training equips team members to offer interventions such as peer support, debriefings, and follow-up care for first responders and affected families.

While the team is still in its early stages, officials say it will soon be ready to provide critical mental health support to the community, reinforcing the county’s commitment to the well-being of those on the front lines and the families they serve.
