Champaign County man arrested for strangling, assaulting woman

Alexander Roberts of Springfield was arrested Sunday evening after a domestic violence incident turned violent.

According to a report from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a call at the 200 block of South Springfield Street in Saint Paris, where they made contact with the victim. The victim stated Roberts was intoxicated when she got home from work.

After confronting Roberts, the victim attempted to walk away from the situation. Roberts grabbed the right arm of the victim in the process, with him stating he would burn the house down if she left.

The victim attempted to escape by hitting Roberts’ arm. Roberts then grabbed the victim by the throat and slammed her to the dining room floor and refused to let go. He then proceeded to slap the victim across the face several times.

Roberts was arrested and booked into the Tri-County Regional jail. He was charged with a felony count of strangulation and two misdemeanors of domestic violence and assault and awaits further sentencing.
