A man was arrested for operating a vehicle while impaired after allegedly causing a disturbance at the Top Hat bar in Johnson Township and falsely claiming to be a federal agent.
In a recent report from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, on August 25th, just after 5:00 PM, Champaign County deputies were dispatched to Top Hat off US Route 36 for a report of an unruly customer.
According to the staff, he reportedly ordered three alcoholic drinks, mixed them, and made a mess at the counter.
When staff asked him to leave, he claimed to be with the FBI and said he was going to “make a call.”
Deputies found the man, identified as 68-year-old Duane Polley, sitting in a 2009 black Chevy truck parked behind the building.
The vehicle was in reverse with the keys in the ignition and the windshield wipers running.
Deputies observed a six-pack of Corona in the truck bed and smelled a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle.
When asked if he had recently smoked and if he had anything to drink, Polley admitted to drinking at the bar but said he only smoked marijuana before driving, not while driving.
Deputies also asked why he called 911.
Polley reportedly said he had called “The FBI’s number—911.”
Deputies noted that Polley was slurring his speech and appeared impaired.
After stepping out of the vehicle, he swayed, stumbled, and failed multiple field sobriety tests.
He was arrested for OVI.
He was transported to the St. Paris substation and agreed to provide a urine sample.
His sister was contacted and planned to pick him up within the hour.
