The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents after a local man lost $65,000 in a scam this week.

According to Sheriff Chad Burroughs, on Tuesday the victim was contacted via email that appeared to be from Apple.

The message instructed him to withdraw funds from his bank account, with the promise that a courier from the Federal Trade Commission would arrive to pick it up.

The victim complied, and a courier came to his home and collected the money.

Sheriff Burroughs reminds you that no government agency will ever contact residents by text message or email to collect money.

Authorities urge residents to be cautious, verify suspicious communications, and report potential scams immediately.
