The Champaign Countywide Communications Center is warning residents about a phone scam involving a caller impersonating Sheriff Chad Burroughs.
According to authorities, multiple residents have reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be the sheriff. The caller tells residents they have missed a court date and now owe fees, sometimes providing a false court case number. Caller ID may show the call as coming from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials stress that Sheriff Burroughs or any staff from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office will never call to notify individuals about missed court dates or request payment of court-related fees.
Residents are urged not to provide personal information over the phone, including dates of birth, Social Security numbers, or banking information.
If you receive a suspicious call of this type, do not share any information and report it to local authorities.
