The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office has announced several unanticipated expenses that were not accounted for in the county’s 2025 budget, prompting the agency to work closely with the Champaign County Commissioners to secure additional funding while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
According to Sheriff Chad Burroughs, the unexpected costs emerged shortly after he assumed office and included key operational priorities that required immediate attention.
Among the largest challenges was the negotiation of a new union contract, which led to a necessary reallocation of budgeted funds.
Additionally, the department faced urgent needs to replace aging vehicles vital to maintaining public safety and to resolve critical issues with outdated computer systems that are essential to daily operations.
“None of these expenditures were originally planned for in the 2025 budget,” Sheriff Burroughs stated. “However, we’ve been working in cooperation with the County Commissioners’ Office to create a responsible and collaborative plan to address these needs.”
Despite the financial pressure, the Sheriff emphasized his office’s ongoing commitment to transparency, accountability, and public service.
“We remain dedicated to transparency, fiscal responsibility, and ensuring that the Sheriff’s Office continues to serve the community effectively,” Burroughs said.
No formal changes to the county budget have been finalized yet, but discussions remain ongoing.
