Early Wednesday morning, an Urbana Police Officer stopped a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado truck, driven by Matthew Melvin, 49, near the intersection of South Jefferson and Patrick Avenues.

Before the stop, the officer saw Melvin erratically operating his vehicle.

The officer spoke with Melvin and determined that Melvin had been operating his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and was unfit to drive.

Melvin refused the officer’s request to be given field sobriety tests at the scene of the stop.

As a result of the officer’s investigation, Melvin was arrested and charged with Operating a Vehicle While under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs (OVI), a first-degree misdemeanor.

Melvin was placed in custody and transported to the Urbana Police Division, where he later refused to provide a breath sample.

The Sheriff’s initial court date is set for Friday, December 20th in Champaign County Municipal Court.
