The City of Bellefontaine is issuing a strong call to action for residents and property owners to clear snow and ice from sidewalks, citing ongoing safety concerns across the community.

City officials say many sidewalks remain covered with snow and ice, creating hazardous conditions—particularly for students walking to school and bus stops, as well as for residents who rely on sidewalks for daily travel.

With an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow expected on Friday, officials stress that taking action now is especially important.

Under city ordinance, property owners and occupants are responsible for maintaining sidewalks adjacent to their property.

According to Bellefontaine City Ordinance 1406.04, all sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking spaces, and similar areas must be kept in good repair and free from hazardous conditions.

Ordinance 1406.05 requires that snow be removed from sidewalks within the first four hours after daylight following a snowfall.

When sidewalks are icy, they must be made safe and passable by removing the ice or applying sand, salt, or other suitable materials.

City leaders emphasize that this is not simply a reminder, but an urgent appeal to protect public safety.

Residents who have already cleared their sidewalks are thanked for their efforts.

The city also encourages neighbors to check on one another and offer assistance when possible, noting that a few minutes of help can go a long way in keeping Bellefontaine safe and accessible for everyone during winter weather.
