Champaign County Commissioner Nino Vitale is speaking out against the proposed Hillclimber Solar Project, sharing his opposition in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning.

Vitale said updated solar project maps show ongoing changes in Urbana Township and across the county, but his stance “has not changed.”

“I am against them, I am against them getting special tax breaks and am on record voting against special tax breaks for these projects.”

Vitale said nearly 18 years of study have led him to conclude that large-scale solar harms farmland, the electric grid, and energy prices.

While county commissioners don’t have final authority over such projects, Vitale said he will continue voting against any special tax incentives tied to them.
