On Monday, as part of its annual Veterans Day program, Benjamin Logan High School honored local veterans with a special ceremony, including the dedication of a flag to Mr. Philip Godwin, a distinguished U.S. Army veteran.
The flag, which flew over the Logan County Courthouse in October 2024, was presented by Logan County Commissioners Mike Yoder and Mark Robinson.
Commissioner Joe Antram was unable to attend the ceremony.
Mr. Godwin, a native of Zanesfield, Ohio, served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1967.
He was an E4 Specialist with the 5th Division Infantry at Fort Carson, Colorado, where he earned the Army Expert Rifle Badge and the Good Conduct Medal for his exemplary service.
After his active-duty service, Godwin continued to serve in the Army Reserve, first with the 83rd Division in Marysville, Ohio, and later with the 251st Division in Kenton, Ohio, where he achieved the rank of E5 Sergeant.
Throughout his life, Godwin has remained an active member of his community.
He is a proud member of the Blue Jacket Post 599 American Legion in Zanesfield, Ohio.
A 1957 graduate of Zanesfield Monroe High School, Godwin has spent much of his life in the area.
He was joined at the ceremony by his wife, Sheryl, and their son, John, who is also a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.
The dedication of the flag to Mr. Godwin was a poignant reminder of the service and sacrifice of veterans, not just on Veterans Day, but every day.
The Logan County Commissioners and the high school program organizers expressed their gratitude to all veterans for their service, and Mr. Godwin was visibly moved by the recognition.
The flag dedication ceremony was one of the many events across the county commemorating Veterans Day and celebrating the courage and commitment of those who have served in the armed forces.
