On Tuesday afternoon, the Logan County Commissioners honored Air Force veteran Suzanne Tapp with a formal flag presentation at the commissioners’ office in Bellefontaine.
As part of their ongoing recognition of local veterans, the Commissioners presented Tapp with the American flag that flew over the Logan County Courthouse during May 2025.
The flag had been displayed in observance of Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, then formally retired and gifted in appreciation of her military service and community involvement.
Commissioner Greg Fitzpatrick conducted the presentation, noting, “Today we’re very pleased to recognize our recipient for the month of May 2025, Ms. Suzanne Tapp.”
Tapp served on active duty in the United States Air Force from 1972 to 1976, specializing in weather observation.
During her service, she received numerous honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.
She was also recognized for her role as a Weather Emergency Specialist during the devastating 1974 tornado outbreak in the Xenia area.
A 1967 graduate of Bellefontaine High School, Tapp grew up in Bellefontaine and now resides in Huntsville.
She was joined at the ceremony by her husband Greg Johnston, daughter Ashley Lile, and grandchildren Gwen, Ronin, and Kira Lile.
Tapp talks about her service:
Additional guests included Clerk of Courts Jackie Prater, along with representatives from the Logan County Veterans Office: Amy Ricketts, Laurie Varner, Ray Stamm, and Richard Woodruff.
Staff from the Commissioners Office were also in attendance, including Logan County Administrator David Henry and Administrative Clerk DeDe Doss.
The event served as a public display of gratitude and support for veterans in the community.
Tapp was selected for this month’s honor based on her distinguished military record and her continued involvement in veteran-related causes.
The Logan County Commissioners regularly retire and present flags that have flown above the courthouse to recognize veterans who have served with honor.
