Community invited to contribute to time capsule at new shrine

A local nonprofit is asking the community to help preserve the legacy of the Our Lady of Fatima Shrine at Indian Lake.

The original shrine, dedicated in 1964 and once one of the tallest statues of the Virgin Mary in the United States, was destroyed by a tornado in March 2024.

The 43-foot-tall monument included a rotating 19-foot fiberglass statue, fountains, music, and lighting.

Plans were underway for a 60th anniversary celebration when the tornado struck.

Now, a new shrine is under construction at the same location, 261 Chase Ave., Russells Point.

The shrine’s owner, The American Society of Ephesus, Inc., is including a stainless steel time capsule in the cornerstone, set to be opened in 100 years.

“We want the community to be part of this,” said Bill Quatman, president of the Lima-based nonprofit. “What would you like your great-grandchildren to read in 100 years? What memories of the lake and the Shrine would you like to share?”

Community members are encouraged to submit letters, photographs, articles, or other artifacts to be included in the time capsule. Submissions are due by Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

  • Digital submissions (PDF letters) can be emailed to Amy Bihn at [email protected].
  • Physical items such as letters, photos, or booklets may be delivered to: Amy Bihn c/o St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, P.O. Box 329, 464 Madison Ave., Russells Point, OH 43348. The church office is open for drop-offs Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The organization reserves the right to exclude any items deemed inappropriate for a religious shrine.

Submissions will not be returned, and no compensation will be provided.

The Our Lady of Fatima Shrine was originally dedicated in August 1964.

The new shrine will be approximately the same height as the original, featuring a fiberglass statue currently in production.

St. Mary of the Woods Parish, founded in 1927, is supporting the effort and encourages the community to participate as part of its mission to foster spiritual growth and strengthen the Christian community.
