Logan County Dog Warden Deputy Jake Boyd and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office are asking for the community’s help to raise $200,000 to support the construction of the new Logan County Animal Shelter, currently being built on the Logan County Sheriff’s Office property.
The future facility will cover approximately 8,400 square feet and is designed to provide significantly improved care for animals while expanding adoption services and reducing the need to transfer animals out of the county.
“The mission of the shelter,” Deputy Boyd said, “is to save as many animal lives as possible and provide shelter for lost animals until they are reclaimed by their owners or adopted into loving forever homes.”
In 2024, the sheriff’s office kennels housed 227 dogs, including 85 from the City of Bellefontaine.
Due to limited space and resources, 41 dogs were transferred to Shelby County, costing Logan County taxpayers more than $41,000.
The county recorded just 28 adoptions, and only one dog was euthanized after showing severe aggression that could not be safely managed.
The shelter will increase housing capacity for stray, abandoned, and neglected animals; provide an adoption center for unclaimed pets; introduce cat adoptions with a dedicated space for cats; offer temporary housing for livestock involved in neglect or abuse cases; and include an open dog run to improve the animals’ health and socialization.
The new shelter design includes 23 dog kennels, each with access to outdoor runs and areas separated for small and large dogs.
There will be a quiet, dedicated room for cats, as well as grooming, quarantine, and veterinary rooms for medical care and recovery.
Visitor rooms will offer a comfortable space for potential adopters to meet and interact with animals.
The shelter is currently raising funds for kennels, cat condos, and other essential equipment.
Community members are encouraged to sponsor a dog kennel for $4,000 or a cat condo for $2,500.
Each kennel or cat condo sponsorship will include a plaque permanently displayed on the kennel or condo in recognition of the donor’s support.
In addition, all monetary donations will be recognized on a donor wall inside the completed shelter.
Donation levels include:
- Toy Level for gifts between $500 and $1,000
- Hounds Level from $1,001 to $3,000
- Working Level from $3,001 to $5,000
- Terriers Level from $5,001 to $10,000
- Sporting Dogs Level for donations over $10,001
Donations are being accepted by Behind the Badge Volunteers, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting the project, and can be made in cash at the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, located at 284 County Road 32 South, Bellefontaine, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
