U.S. Congressman Jim Jordan visited Bellefontaine late Friday morning, joining members of the Logan County Republican Party for a brief luncheon at The Maxwell.

Jordan, who serves as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, addressed local party members and provided an overview of former Special Counsel Jack Smith and his role in recent high-profile federal investigations.

Smith served as special counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice from November 2022 through January 2025, overseeing criminal investigations involving former President Donald Trump.

His office filed indictments against Trump in 2023.

Following Trump’s re-election in 2024, the cases were later dismissed or altered amid legal challenges and longstanding Department of Justice policy regarding the indictment of a sitting president.

Smith resigned from the Department of Justice in January 2025.

He is scheduled to appear before the House Judiciary Committee in Washington, D.C., next Thursday.

In addition to discussing Smith, Jordan spoke about Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the current situation in Venezuela.

He concluded his remarks by taking questions from those in attendance, including reflections on the effects of the “Big Beautiful Bill.”

The luncheon marked a brief stop in Logan County for Jordan, who regularly meets with local Republican organizations when he is home in Ohio.
