An attempt at a controlled field burn started by local farmer Glen Kramer in Rushsylvania escalated into an uncontrolled fire Wednesday afternoon.
The blaze became uncontrollable around 4:30 PM in the 1400 block of State Route 274, prompting a response from fire departments.
Fire crews from Huntsville, Rushcreek Township, and Bellefontaine were dispatched to the scene.
Initial estimates indicated that more than 20 acres of grassland were burning.
The fire’s rapid spread was fueled by dry conditions and breezy weather, with temperatures in the area around 50°F and low humidity levels.
A home near the blaze was a top priority for crews at the scene, as well as preventing further spread.
Crews reported that just after 5:30 PM, the fire was contained.
Ohio is currently under a statewide daytime burn ban, prohibiting open burning from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of May 2025.
This ban aims to reduce the risk of wildfires during periods of dry vegetation, low humidity, and daytime winds.
Under this order, activities such as open burning of trash, debris, waste, combustibles, leaf piles, campfires, bonfires, and the use or discharge of fireworks are prohibited.
The burn ban is in place due to increased fire risk associated with dry vegetation, low humidity, and daytime winds.
Residents are urged to exercise caution and adhere to the restrictions to prevent potential wildfire incidents.
Thick black smoke from the fire could be seen across the county.
