The Council on Rural Services (CORS) is warning families that its Head Start and Early Head Start programs may face a temporary shutdown starting Monday, December 1, if the federal government shutdown continues or grant funding is delayed.
Head Start programs are fully funded by the federal government, and CORS’ annual funding is scheduled for renewal on December 1.
Without timely processing of grant funds in Washington by Friday, November 28, the agency could be forced to suspend services.
A closure would affect more than 900 children and families across nine counties and result in temporary layoffs for approximately 225 staff members.
Families would lose access to daily meals, early learning, infant and toddler care, and other vital support services.
CORS Board Chair Tim Summers says Head Start represents “opportunity and hope” for families, while Board Member Dr. Laurie White emphasizes that the programs are “a cornerstone of the community and critical to children’s futures.”
CORS is actively working with partners at all levels and will continue to update families and the community as more information becomes available.
