A counterfeit $100 bill was used to purchase gift cards at the Walgreens on East Sandusky Avenue on Christmas Eve, prompting an investigation by local authorities.
Tuesday afternoon, Bellefontaine Police were dispatched to Walgreens after the store manager, reported that a suspect had used the fake bill to buy a Bass Pro Shop gift card and an Amazon gift card.
The transaction, which took place around 3:30 PM, appeared normal at first.
The cashier, noticing the busyness of the store, checked the bill with a marker.
The bill passed the marker test, and the cashier completed the sale without suspicion.
However, after the suspect left, the cashier realized that the bill had “FOR MOTION PICTURE PURPOSES” printed on the front.
Upon further inspection, it was revealed that the bill was marked as “Prop Money” from Propmoney.com, a website that sells replica currency for film productions.
Management was able to review the store’s security footage of the incident, which helped confirm the details of the transaction.
The gift card purchases were voided, and the counterfeit $100 bill was turned over to the police for investigation.
