Renowned leadership expert Stephen M. R. Covey spoke to local professionals Thursday during a leadership development event hosted by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce, urging a shift in how leaders approach their roles in today’s evolving workplace.

Covey challenged attendees to move away from traditional “command and control” leadership styles and instead embrace what he described as a “trust and inspire” model — one that prioritizes empowerment, collaboration, and human potential.

During his presentation, Covey outlined five major forces reshaping leadership today: the changing nature of the world, work, the workplace, the workforce, and individual choice.

These shifts, he said, require leaders to adapt to remain effective.

Covey highlighted five core beliefs that define trust-centered leadership, including the ideas that people inherently possess greatness, should be treated as whole individuals, and that leadership is rooted in stewardship.

He also stressed the importance of an abundance mindset and the belief that lasting influence comes from within.

Expanding on those principles, Covey encouraged leaders to rethink their responsibilities — not as controllers of people, but as catalysts for growth.

He urged leaders to prioritize care over competition, service over self-interest, and to lead by example.
